The Science of Addiction: How Drugs Affect The Brain

Addiction is a complex and multifaceted disease that impacts millions of individuals worldwide.

While societal perceptions often view addiction as a moral failing or lack of willpower, the reality is far more nuanced. At its core, addiction is a chronic brain disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), approximately 21.6 million people aged 12 or older in the United States had a substance use disorder in 2019.

This staggering number underscores the importance of understanding the science of addiction to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies. To understand addiction fully, it’s essential to explore the intricate ways in which drugs affect the brain.

The Brain’s Reward System

Addictive drugs, whether it be opioids, stimulants, or alcohol, hijack the brain’s natural reward system. When a person engages in pleasurable activities such as eating, socializing, or exercising, the brain releases neurotransmitters like dopamine, which create feelings of pleasure and reinforcement. Drugs, however, flood the brain with unnaturally high levels of dopamine, leading to intense feelings of euphoria or “high.”

“Drugs essentially act in a way that tricks the brain into thinking that drug use is essential for survival, hijacking the brain’s reward circuitry,” shares our VP of Nursing, Maria Perdikakis, RN.

Neuroplasticity and Adaptation

Prolonged drug use can lead to significant changes in the brain’s structure and function, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity. Over time, the brain adapts to drugs by reducing its sensitivity to dopamine or altering the function of other neurotransmitter systems. These changes contribute to tolerance, where individuals require higher doses of drugs to achieve the same effects, and ultimately, dependence and addiction.

“The brain is remarkably adaptable, but prolonged exposure to drugs can lead to maladaptive changes that perpetuate the cycle of addiction,” says our Director of Clinical Services, Jacob Beurelein, MA, LPCC-S.

The Prefrontal Cortex and Impulse Control

Addiction is not solely a matter of pleasure-seeking; it also involves impairments in cognitive control and decision-making. Drugs disrupt the prefrontal cortex’s normal functioning, the brain region responsible for executive functions such as impulse control, decision-making, and judgment. As a result, individuals struggling with addiction may prioritize drug use over other essential activities despite knowing the potential consequences.

“Addiction is not just about pleasure; it’s about profound changes in the brain’s ability to regulate behavior and decision-making,” shares our VP of Clinical Services, Rachel Johnson, PhD.

By recognizing addiction as a disease, we can reduce stigma, promote empathy, and provide individuals struggling with addiction the support and resources they need to heal.
